This April and May Company of Sirens present for the first time in Wales two of the most talked about British plays of recent years, Tender Napalm and Mercury Fur. Tender Napalm “I could squeeze a bullet between those lips, point first” A man and woman are in love, but something terrible has happened to them, they take refuge in their secret places, those places we hide from everyone but our lovers. Explosive, poetic and brutal, the play weaves a compelling tapestry to re-examine and re-define the language of love and how that love struggles in the face of catastrophe. “Inventive, risk taking….theatrical fire The Daily Telegraph “The writing seethes and burns...Seldom has sexual love been explored on stage with such ferocious honesty, brutality and melting tenderness” The Guardian Mercury Fur “I love you so much I could burst into flames” This play caused a sensation when it was first presented in a legendary production by Paines Plough. In a city ravaged by riots and hallucinogenic butterflies, brothers Elliot and Duncan survive by organising “parties” where their clients wildest fantasies are realised. As they prepare a derelict flat for the next event it becomes clear this particular party will guarantee not just their safety but their salvation. “There are moments in Mercury Fur that almost make your heart stop” The Times “Almost unbearable to endure and yet so compelling you cant stop watching” The Guardian About the Author Playwright Philip Ridley was born in the East End of London, where he still lives and works. He is a contemporary artist, poet, novelist, film-maker and one of the country's most celebrated living playwrights. Ridley has been described as 'probably a genius' (Time Out), 'a visionary' (Rolling Stone), 'the master of modern myth' (Guardian) and 'the best British playwright of the last 20 years'.
