Angela Carterís The Magic Toyshop

Angela Carterís The Magic Toyshop Theatr Iolo and Invisible Ink present a bold new adaption of Angela Carter’s sinister and sensual fairytale this spring.

Written by one of the greatest female novelists of the 20th Century, The Magic Toyshop has been adapted for the stage in all its sensory glory in a co-production with Invisible Ink. Staged for the first time in Wales, Angela Carter’s The Magic Toyshop will be performing at Chapter Arts Centre between the 7th and 17th of May.

This sinister and twisted tale of sexual awakening, tells the story of Melanie, a young girl forced to leave her comfortable rural home to live with relatives she has never met. There’s Aunt Margaret, mute since her wedding day, musical Francie and volatile Finn who kisses Melanie for the first time. Brooding over it all is Uncle Philip who loves only the life-sized puppets he creates in his workshop.

Set in a world where fantasy and familial reality collide, this ambitious stage adaptation realises the visceral imagery and powerful storytelling of Angela Carter for audiences anew.

The company invisible Ink is a partnership between Alan Harris, one of Wales’s leading writers and freelance director Sita Calvert-Ennals, who has been directing new writing with a visual twist for the last 10 years.

The Magic Toyshop was initially developed under Theatr Iolo’s Emergent Artist scheme, which aims to develop new and exciting talent in Wales.

Featuring live music, puppetry and film this compelling production offers audiences a heady mix for the senses and a chance to see contemporary theatre at its inventive best.
