NATIONAL THEATRE WALES’ THE GATHERING/YR HELFA TO EXPLORE A YEAR’S CYCLE OF SHEEP FARMING IN SNOWDONIA
GILLIAN CLARKE, THE NATIONAL POET OF WALES, WILL WRITE, AND
LOUISE ANN WILSON WILL CREATE AND DIRECT THIS WALKING PERFORMANCE IN SEPT

National Theatre Wales’ next production will be a powerful exploration of the annual cycle of sheep-farming. The Gathering/Yr Helfa is the culmination of three years’ observation of life at Hafod Y Llan, a working hill farm managed by the National Trust, at the foothills of Snowdon.

Dogs and sheep in the dance of the slopes,
the mountain deep in animal mind,
hefting the weight, treading the shape of it,
the knowledge, cynefin
in their bones, nerves, blood

Join National Theatre Wales for a remarkable journey on foot through installations and performances, inspired by this iconic location, its day-to-day workings, its history and its people. Created and directed by Louise Ann Wilson, this production will feature new poetry by Wales’ national poet, Gillian Clarke, with sound, film, and movement.

Louise Ann Wilson is a landscape-performance maker whose company (www.louiseannwilson.com) creates site-specific walking-performance in rural locations that seek to articulate, reflect upon, and transform significant life-events. Recent productions include: Ghost Bird (Sept 2012), a silent walk and live-art installation in the Trough of Bowland; Fissure (May 2011), a three day walking-performance in the Yorkshire Dales; Still Life (Sept 2008, rev.2009) and Jack Scout (Sept 2010) both co-productions with Sap Dance in response to two locations on Morecambe Bay, Lancashire. From 1998–2008 Louise was the Co-Artistic Director of wilson+wilson (www.wilsonandwilson.org.uk).

Writer Gillian Clarke, National Poet for Wales since 2008, was born in Cardiff and lives in Ceredigion, where she and her husband keep a small flock of sheep. She was awarded the Queen’s Gold medal for Poetry in December 2010, the Wilfred Owen Award in 2012. Recent books include A Recipe for Water, and a writer’s journal, At the Source. Her latest collection, Ice, was shortlisted for the TS Eliot Award 2012. She has written for radio, and translated poetry and prose from Welsh.

Cast and other creative team members to be announced.
