“Arcadia”, The Perfect Marriage of Ideas and High Comedy.
|
‘Arcadia’ has been called ‘the perfect marriage of ideas and high comedy’, ‘Stoppard’s richest and most mature comedy’ and even ‘the greatest play of its time’. In July (23rd -26th) audiences at the Morlan Centre, Aberystwyth can find out why.
With his characteristic verbal wit, Stoppard weaves together a country-house romance, a historical puzzle, a gentle satire on academic ambition, an exploration of the limits of knowledge and a poignant story of love and loss.
Director Caroline Clark says, ‘Tom Stoppard’s earlier reputation for intellectual humour without heart was actually disproved long ago with ‘The Real Thing’ and, of course, ‘Shakespeare in Love’. In ‘Arcadia’ thinking and feeling are equally important.
Love is ‘the attraction that Newton left out’ but which turns the well-ordered Georgian country house and perhaps even the well-ordered universe upside-down with both comic and tragic effects.
Louche Arcadians will be performing at 7pm, doors open at 6.30pm, on Wednesday 23rd to Saturday 26th July
Tickets (£8 & £7conc.) which can be reserved by calling the Louche Theatre Box Office on 01970 612617.
