Literature Wales has partnered with USA tour operator Tauck for the first time to provide a Welsh literature experience to Tauck’s ‘England, Scotland & Wales’ tour. Running weekly from May – October 2014, each tour will stop off at the Royal Oak Hotel in the border town of Welshpool en route from Conwy to Stratford-on-Avon to enjoy an event with Wales-based storyteller Helen East.

Accompanied by musician Rick Wilson, Helen has created an exclusive musical, literary and storytelling performance ‘Na Chllcied na Chlo/ An Open Door Welcome,’ reflecting on sources of Wales' poetic tradition and its influence over the border, while tracing that border's bloody history.  It draws on Welsh myths, legends, poetry and facts, including the Mabinogion, Arthurian tales, local stories and reminiscences, the landscape itself, and bards from Iolo Goch to Shakespeare to Dylan Thomas.

Storyteller Helen East says: “Creating and reshaping this performance piece to suit each new group we meet has been a delight and we have had wonderful feedback to date: "This is my highlight  of the tour so far", "It's like a conversation but it is so poetic",  "The music - and the strange instruments add so much", "Magical! Your stories take me far away" are some of the comments we've heard, but it's the look in people's eyes and their reluctance to leave, that we most appreciate.”

The US is one of Wales’ key overseas markets and Visit Wales worked with Literature Wales to support the development of the relationship with Tauck. Tauck's ‘England, Scotland & Wales’ tour takes tourists on an unforgettable experience of the British Isles covering Edinburgh, Loch Lomond, Hadrian’s Wall, the Lake District, Bath, Conwy, Stratford, Stonehenge and London.

“We offer tours and cruises to more than 70 countries, and our goal everywhere is to provide our guests with authentic cultural experiences that are both enriching and engaging,” said Art Cox, Tauck’s Product Manager for the UK. “Literature Wales is a great fit for us, and we’re excited to enhance our ‘England, Scotland & Wales’ itinerary with Helen’s and Rick’s unique storytelling.”

Literature Wales runs its own annual Literary Tourism programme, and this year has run a successful series of Dylan Thomas inspired tours ‘A Dylan Odyssey’ that aims to take visitors to the very heart of Dylan’s worlds by boat, canoe, horse-drawn carriage, bus, steam train, foot and even on horseback.

Literature Wales Chief Executive Lleucu Siencyn said: “We are delighted to be working with Tauck to introduce a flavour of Welsh literature, culture and history to enhance their tour in Wales and hope we can work together in the future. Literary Tourism is the perfect way to introduce literature into people’s lives in a fun and accessible way.”
Tauck's ‘England, Scotland & Wales’ tours run from May to October 2014.
