National Dance Company Wales announced as regional hub for English National Ballet’s Dance for Parkinson’s programme

National Dance Company Wales has been announced as one of two new regional hubs for English National Ballet’s Dance for Parkinson’s programme. Alongside DanceEast in Ipswich, the two companies join existing partners Oxford, in partnership with Oxford City Council and Liverpool, in partnership with Merseyside Dance Initiative.
English National Ballet is a UK leader for Dance for Parkinson’s and has been working with people with Parkinson’s since 2010, the first major dance company in the UK to do so. Its national Dance for Parkinson’s programme offers people with Parkinson’s, their carers, friends and family members the opportunity to engage in high quality artistic dance activity, inspired by the Company’s repertoire, within a professional dance studio. National Dance Company Wales’ involvement in the scheme now means that people in Cardiff and South Wales can gain access to this remarkable programme.
Through weekly classes held in London and regional hub partner venues, in the case of NDCWales the Dance House at Wales Millennium Centre, the Dance for Parkinson’s programme provides an insight into the creative process of a production with opportunities to meet Company dancers and musicians, watch rehearsals and performances by English National Ballet.
Ahead of the full weekly programmes that begin in 2015, both of the new regional hubs hold open taster classes, that offer participants the opportunity to learn more about Dance for Parkinson’s, and a group visit to see English National Ballet perform.
The group theatre visit includes exclusive behind the scenes access to the Company, a presentation by members of the Wardrobe department and English National Ballet’s Orchestra and a chance to see costumes from the production up close. The theatre visit is a key part of the Dance for Parkinson’s programme and gives participants context to the exercises learnt in the weekly classes.
In acting as a regional hub for this remarkable programme, NDCWales continues to create partnerships throughout the UK dance sector as well as continuing it its promise to open dance up to its audiences to enjoy and participate in. Extending its outreach programme to these new hubs is integral to English National Ballet’s commitment to raising the public profile of Dance for Parkinson’s, giving access to, and advocating the benefits of dance and cultural activities for people with Parkinson’s.
