Theatre in Wales

The latest theatre, dance and performance news

Directed by Deborah Light, renowned dancers Eddie Ladd and Gwyn Emberton come together in captivating and compelling new work, CAITLIN, based on the life of Caitlin Thomas.

In a year that has brought many performances, television programs and exhibitions to celebrate the centenary of the birth and work of one of Wales’ most celebrated writers, Dylan Thomas, one new work stands out.

Conceived by Eddie Ladd, directed by Deborah Light and performed by Eddie Ladd and Gwyn Emberton, Caitlin brings together three of Wales’ most recognised independent dance and theatre makers. This unique work for a limited audience will be presented in Cardiff, Swansea and Montgomery in Autumn 2014.

Caitlin was the wife of poet Dylan Thomas. At the start of the 70s, 20 years after he died, she started going to Alcoholics Anonymous.
Set in a circle of chairs, ready for an AA meeting, Caitlin makes a determined effort to deal with her tempestuous past. The audience sit in the circle with her, and are witness to Caitlin’s account of a relationship that was fuelled by love, addiction, jealousy and infidelity.
This places the audience at the heart of a unique and powerful performance experience.

Delivered through tender, brave and fierce performances Caitlin and Dylan drink, fight, love and leave each other. The unoccupied chairs become part of the action, Caitlin sends them flying as she re-visits her chaotic life.

The creative team is joined by Sion Orgon who has created a saturating electronic soundscore that responds to the action.

In a work that reminds us that even the brightest stars are vulnerable and
fallible, the audience are immersed in a compelling theatre experience that is both brutal and tender.

Ladd says of the original commission, “The Library wanted to feature his (Dylan) wife, Caitlin, as well, and to this end asked me to make a performance about her. It quickly became a duet, with Gwyn Emberton taking the role of Dylan. I asked Deborah Light to choreograph and Siôn Orgon to make the sound score.”

Light says, “it was an honour to be asked by Eddie to work on CAITLIN in the role of choreographer/director. Eddie and Gwyn are intelligent, rigorous and extremely talented performers, combining this with the vibrant, complex and emotive source material of Caitlin’s biography has been a hugely exciting project. The collaboration has proved extremely rich and rewarding and I think the work we have made is both powerful and touching.”
