Pridd to be performed at theatre festival for European minority languages
|
In October this year, an extract from Pridd by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will be performed as part of a theatre festival for European minority languages in Bautzen, Germany, called Odyssee. This is the first time the festival will be held and Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will join with various theatre companies from around Europe to showcase their work, as well as to collaborate and explore the possibilities of establishing this festival as a permanent fixture, and to create a joint theatre project for the future which will bring European native minority experiences together.
Pridd, by Aled Jones Williams toured Wales in 2013 and is a one man show especially written for the actor Owen Arwyn. Sara Lloyd, the company’s Associate Director will be directing the piece, which will be part of an evening of performances by the various companies visiting the festival.
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will offer the first public use of Sibrwd during the performance, which means there will be a live, simultaneous audio synopsis of the play, as it happens, available to the audience in three languages: English, German and Sorbian. Sorbian is a native minority language which is spoken in Lusatia in eastern Germany, and the festival will be hosted by a German-Sorbian theatre company called Volkstheater based in Bautzen, the region’s capital.
This is the first time that audiences anywhere will have the chance to use Sibrwd, which has been developed by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Galactig, with support by the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts in Wales - Nesta, Arts & Humanities Research Council and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council of Wales. It’s an innovative idea which gives audiences a chance to enjoy performances in any language.
The only thing an audience member will have to do is download the app, plug in their earphones, and the app will whisper snippets in their chosen language, so that they can follow the action.
Created primarily to provide access and to enrich the experience of learners and non-Welsh speakers of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s work, Sibrwd also has the potential to be used internationally by offering access to performances and projects in any language.
Arwel Gruffydd, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s Artistic Director said:
“This festival is a brilliant opportunity for us a as a company to showcase our work internationally and for us to meet with other companies who also work in European minority languages to discuss ideas and share experiences. The fact that we can also take advantage of this opportunity to offer Sibrwd for the first time to an international audience is very exciting, and this after an interesting and productive year of developing this innovative digital platform. We are also looking forward to using it in the near future in relation to some of our productions back home in Wales too.”
Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru will take part in the Odyssee festival between 23rd and 26th October, with Pridd being performed as part of the opening night. |
