Set in present day Wales, Letter from away is the story of Mafawnwy, a woman in her fifties who can't put to rest the ghosts of those she lost in a mining tragedy thirty-five years ago. She copes as best she can with the help of David, her husband and childhood sweetheart. But when a mysterious letter arrives she must choose between shedding light on her troubled past or causing friction in her strained present.

A scripted (or staged reading) is where the actors have done rehearsals but also have their scripts on hand. It is an important part of the playwriting process and could be likened to a demo tape for music or a screen test for film. This work emerged out of the Algonquin College Playwrights Lab (led by Paul Dervis, edited by Amy Friedman) Two sections of it were presented as part of the Hothouse Reading Series at the Fourth Stage (National Arts Centre) in the fall of 2001 and spring of 2003.
There is a charge for this reading because it is a fundraiser to get loot in order to stage a full production in the summer of 2003.
