Hijinx Academy opens in west Wales

Audition days lined up in Carmarthen for a new Hijinx Academy, a professional performance training course for people with learning disabilities in West Wales (Weds 8 & Thurs 9 April 2015)

Next month, Welsh theatre company Hijinx will be holding two days of taster workshops and auditions at Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen to find talented performers with learning disabilities from across West Wales to join the brand new Hijinx Academy West. Hijinx, in conjunction with Arts Care Gofal Celf, are keen to hear from people with a learning disability aged 18+ who are interested in exploring a career in performing arts or who enjoy doing drama for fun.

Hijinx Academies are vocational performance training courses for adults with learning disabilities. The course content includes a range of performance skills, including physical theatre, improvisation, mask work and forum theatre. Beginning in Summer 2015, Hijinx Academy West will be delivered by a team of professional arts practitioners two days per week, 50 weeks per year at Carmarthen’s Lyric Theatre.

Drama Foundation course
Alongside the new Academy, Hijinx will be running a second course offering life skills through drama for adults with more complex learning disabilities, which will also be facilitated by Arts Care Gofal Celf. This will run for one day each week at the Lyric beginning in Summer 2015.
Hijinx and its Academies
Hijinx Academy West is the third of its kind to be established by Hijinx, following the success of the Hijinx Academy South, launched in Cardiff in 2012, and most recently one in North Wales last November.

Hijinx’s Executive Director, Clare Williams, said “We are thrilled to be launching the third Hijinx Academy in Carmarthen in partnership with Arts Care Gofal Celf. We have created the Academies to ensure that promising performers with learning disabilities literally have a platform to develop and show off their extraordinary ability and skills. We have seen remarkable progress from the students in our North and South Academies and can’t wait to begin that journey with a new company of students from across West Wales.”

Partners

Hijinx are establishing the new Academy in partnership with Arts Care Gofal Celf, a Carmarthen-based charity who develop, manage and deliver arts projects and workshops for people with disabilities and for other community groups; and the Lyric Theatre, Carmarthen.
