New collection of Welsh drama launched at Cardiff’s first pub theatre The Other Room

The launch of a new collection of contemporary Welsh drama will be celebrated at Cardiff’s first pub theatre The Other Room on Thursday 28 May.

Contemporary Welsh Plays is the first collection of plays that officially recognises the new wave of Welsh playwrights. It showcases a wide range of forms, themes and political concerns, as well as representing the most exciting voices at the forefront of Welsh drama, taking the temperature on what be considered to be the first golden age of Welsh playwriting.

Edited by The Other Room’s Artistic Director Kate Wasserberg and playwright Tim Price (Teh Internet is Serious Business, The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning, Protest Song, Praxis Makes Perfect and founder member of Dirty Protest), the collection comprises Tonypandemonium by Rachel Trezise, The Radicalisation of Bradley Manning by Tim Price, Gardening for the Unfulfilled and Alienated by Brad Birch, Llwyth by Dafydd James (published in Welsh), Parallel Lines by Katherine Chandler and Bruised by Matthew Trevannion.

Kate Wasserberg comments:

“This collection is intended as a celebration of all Welsh writers and those who support them, and the six plays contained in it can only hope to be a snapshot of the fantastically diverse work currently being made in Wales. The plays are united by a confidence and authenticity that is indicative of the work being created in Wales today, specific to, but not bound by, its origins. It has been a privilege to work on Contemporary Welsh Plays with Tim and I hope this collection is the first of many.”

Tim Price comments:

“It's been a privilege to put this collection together with Kate. Playwriting in Wales has never been stronger, and this collection is a fantastic introduction for anyone interested in Welsh theatre.”

Contemporary Welsh Plays will be launched at The Other Room, Cardiff’s first pub theatre located in Porter’s, on Thursday 28 May. The collection is published by Bloomsbury - for more information, visit
