Gelynion Enemies contemporary poetry in collaboration

Across the country this month, over 50 poets are collaborating in pairs on original new work. They’ll be performing at live events in Newport, Cardiff, Swansea, Aberystwyth, Bangor, Hay-on-Wye and London.

Gelynion is a groundbreaking exploration of contemporary poetry in Wales through the potential of collaboration. Organised by Poetry Wales and the Enemies poetry project, Gelynion tours Wales from the 19th to the 29th May 2015 bringing together poets from across the country to present original collaborations.

A core group of six touring poets: Joe Dunthorne, Rhys Trimble, Eurig Salisbury, Zoë Skoulding, Nia Davies and SJ Fowler will be performing collaborations in rolling pairs at seven live events. They’ll be joined at each stage by at least four more pairs of collaborating poets working in Welsh, English and several other languages. The events take place in Newport (19-May), Cardiff (20-May), Swansea (22-May), Aberystwyth (25-May), Bangor (26-May), Hay Festival (29-May) and finally in London (5-Jun).

Poetry Wales’s editor Nia Davies comments: ‘One common conception is that poetry can only be crafted in solitude. But I don’t believe this is the whole story. Poetry is social and grows out of our relationships with one another – friendships that can be both antagonistic and loving. Enemies is a project that celebrates these relationships - bringing together poets to work on original collaborations in pairs. The Welsh chapter of the project - Gelynion – will feature multilingual, performative and innovative work by some of the most exciting poets and performers working today in Wales (as well as England, India and beyond!).’

Gelynion is an Enemies and Poetry Wales project supported by Arts Council Wales and Big Lottery and the Hay Festival in partnership with Chris Paul, The Abacus Rooms Cardiff, Volcano Theatre Swansea, Aberystwyth Arts Centre and the Institute of Literature Languages and Creative Arts at Aberystwyth University, Bangor University, the North Wales International Poetry Festival, Wales Arts International and Rich Mix.
