The latest theatre, dance and performance news

The auditions are over for another year, and the cast for Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s 2015 summer production, LEGALLY BLONDE have been announced. As ever the cast members have a wealth of theatrical and West End experience between them, as the Arts Centre once again brings the very best calibre of performers to Aberystwyth.

This year’s cast are a mixture of new faces and some familiar favourites. Rebecca Stenhouse, who recently starred in Rock of Ages, will take on the lead role of Elle whilst a much loved friend of the Arts Centre, West End legend Peter Karrie will be playing Callaghan. Peter is no stranger to the Theatr y Werin stage, having appeared in the 2006 summer production of Fiddler on the Roof as well as in many touring shows here.

Karl Loxley will take on the dual role of Dewey/Carlos, and is perhaps best known currently to fans of the BBC TV series ‘The Voice’ where he was in Tom Jones’s team and reached the Knockout rounds. Also returning will be Ricardo Castro, who was one of the trio of gangsters who entertained audiences with their dance moves in last year’s production of Sister Act – particularly the ladies in the front row!

He is joined by fellow Sister Act cast member David Barrett, playing Emmett, who probably won’t be repeating his memorable scene from last year where he danced in a pair of very short shorts and a bow tie – and not much else!

The Arts Centre are hoping to repeat last year’s record breaking success of Sister Act with this year’s production of Legally Blonde, and have brought together the same artistic team again – director Anthony Williams, Musical Director Michael Morwood and Designer David Shields.

Director Anthony Williams said:

‘The reputation of Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s summer shows is known throughout the theatrical world – we had over 2000 applications for auditions this year which is just incredible. We’ve now whittled those down to our amazing cast of 16, and I can’t wait to start rehearsals. The cast always love their summers in Aberystwyth as the welcome they get here is so strong – summer season in Aberystwyth is really is a unique thing to be involved with, you really feel that you’re part of the community.’

The Arts Centre’s summer musical productions are something of an institution, having been the ‘jewel in the crown’ of the venue’s summer programmes for over 30 years. Thousands of audiences have flocked to see past successes, which in recent years have included the hit musicals Sister Act, Chicago and Hairspray. Many of the cast and crew have gone on to become household names – for example audiences back in 1985 Would have seen a young Michael Ball in his first professional role appearing in the cast of Godspell!

Legally Blonde the Musical is based on the popular film of the same name, starring Reese Witherspoon. It tells the tale of Elle Woods, who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School to try and win him back, with hilarious consequences. Worlds collide but with the help of her friends and her trusty chihuahua, Bruiser, she learns that it is possible to be both smart and fashionable! The all-singing, all dancing romantic comedy promises to be lots of fun for all the family, and will run for 44 performances from Fri 24 July – Sat 29 August.
