New Welsh play from National Theatre Wales Emerging Director Rachael Boulton
Award-winning Welsh producer Sarah-Jane Leigh’s latest play
Four night run at Chapter starts 9th September 2015
A new Welsh story about fighting for community.
Inspired by true events, The Good Earth is an original Welsh production that sees a small village fighting to save their community against outside forces, and will be shown at Chapter, Cardiff from 9-12 September 2015.
Motherlode’s debut production, by National Theatre Wales emerging director Rachael Boulton, and award-winning producer Sarah Jane Leigh, was developed at the Wales Millennium Centre and a residency at the Park and Dare theatre, Treorchy.
The story of The Good Earth is inspired by actual events and told through physical theatre, Welsh folk song and new writing, bringing to life a valley community torn apart by their council, big business and eventually themselves.
“I came across this story a few years ago about one village that had been told their mountain wasn’t safe - and they all had to leave their homes.” explains the director Rachael. “The battle they had with the council went on for twenty years and had everything: family feuds, corruption, danger - a real saga. I wrote some scenes, but it wasn’t until we discovered our family of characters through devising that The Good Earth, and the whole village came to life.”
The Good Earth is a co-production between Fragments, Motherlode & RCT in association with Chapter Arts Centre and the Wales Millennium Centre. Supported by Arts Council Wales. Original Concept and Direction by Rachael Boulton. Musical direction and arrangement by Max Mackintosh. Devised by the Motherlode.
The Good Earth will show at Chapter Arts Centre from 9-12 September at 7:30 pm. Tickets are available from Chapter (www.chapter.org / 029 2030 4400)
£12 full price / £10 concessions.
