Cash for Welsh language theatre

The extra money was announced by Welsh Culture Minister Jenny Randerson and will be available over three years.

Productions by two companies, Sgript Cymru and Theatr Gwynedd, are due to take place next year.

Sgript Cymru will produce a stage version of Amdani, a play with music and songs derived from Bethan Gwanas' novel and television series.

Meanwhile, Theatr Gwynedd will stage a production of Dan-y-Wenallt, based on Dylan Thomas' Under Milk Wood, timed to coincide with the celebrations
commemorating the 50th anniversary of the poet's death.

Ms Randerson said the assembly government's culture strategy specifically refers to proposals to develop access to Welsh-language theatre.

She said: "The additional £1.5 million will enable the arts council to establish and run the new company, ensuring that there will be coverage
across Wales, taking account of Welsh-speaking areas, with a good range of high quality productions.

"The theatre company will also undertake valuable work with Welsh learners.

"The Welsh language is an important part of our national identity and creativity.

"It is therefore essential that we create as many opportunities as possible for people to see high quality theatre through the medium of English and
Welsh.

"This new money will help us achieve that aim."
