Taking Flight bring inclusive arts and anti-hate message to schools across Wales
Ahead of National Anti-Hate Crime Awareness Week next week, Taking Flight Theatre Company have embarked on a national tour of schools to spread the word across Wales about anti-hate crime. They are touring Matthew Bulgo’s play Real Human Being for year 9 pupils in schools all over Wales.

Taking Flight Theatre wanted to use the powerful piece of theatre written by Matthew Bulgo and redevelop certain aspects of the play to make an even more effective project than the pilot had been.

As part of this project, the show enables young participants to “have their say” in a safe environment and explore the motivations for and impact of the negative behaviours displayed in the piece.

Real Human Being is a piece of theatre specially commissioned by Taking Flight and written by award- winning Welsh playwright, Matthew Bulgo. The piece is played out over the course of a full school day. Interspersed between each section, young audience members have the chance to interact with the actors in character during structured activities, which aim to allow participants to understand the implications surrounding Disability Hate Crime.

Benefits of this project are multiple. Not only are young people made aware of the impact of negative behaviour, but through the use of this technique, they are allowed, in a safe environment, to experiment with their own techniques for dealing with abusive behaviour / bullying.

Although the day is geared towards understanding and tackling Disability Hate Crime, many of these themes and techniques are universal, and can be applied to other situations. In addition, the project heightens awareness about issues of disability.

Real Human Being toured extensively in 2012, 13 and 14 to great success.
The project was selected by UK Home Office (the original funders) as a best practice project and a case study was written.

“I would go as far as to say that it was inspirational for many” Teacher Ysgol Maes Y Gwendraeth

“Powerful live forum theatre drama” Teacher, Hawarden High.
The cast are Connor Allen, Hannah Raynor, Jack Binstead, Josephine Wilson, Jenna Preece, Kate Ellis, Dean Rehman and Llyr Williams.

Jack Binstead (Rem Dogg, Bad Education) commented on being part of Real Human Being, ‘Growing up, I was bullied and I had no disabled role models who I could relate to. I want to be that role model for young people and I think taking the anti-hate crime message to young people in schools is vital.’
