A Disused Ward at Whitchurch Hospital Opens its Doors to the Public for One Last Time
Moment(o)s of Leaving articulates the evocative, semi-vacant location of Whitchurch Hospital, Cardiff whilst addressing the important subject of mental health through the exploration of both biographical material and stories that have emerged from the site.
Whitchurch Hospital, one of Cardiff’s landmarks, will finally close and the services it provides will move to a new, purpose built hospital in Llandough. The old building, eroded by time, can no longer provide the care and comfort that patients need.
The audience will be guided through already abandoned areas of the hospital whilst experiencing live performances alongside a visual and audio landscape created from materials gathered at the site, layered with contributions from performers, collaborators and former staff of the building. It will express the theme of ‘leaving’; both the geographical location and the self when living with mental illness.
“Members of the creative team have shared first-hand accounts of their experience of mental illness as well as time spent at Whitchurch Hospital as patients. Artistically, their insider knowledge has informed the representation of how it feels to ‘leave’ one’s mind; personal stories of the Whitchurch community leaving the building add a layer of poignancy. Hopefully visitors will experience this unique collaboration as an evocative event.” – Elaine Paton, Artistic Director
