MARIINSKY BALLET TO GIVE ITS ONLY 2016 UK PERFORMANCES AT WALES MILLENNIUM CENTRE THIS SPRING
|
This spring the Mariinsky Theatre returns to Wales Millennium Centre with an exclusive residency that showcases a thrilling repertoire from its Ballet and Orchestra, under Artistic Director Valery Gergiev. The Mariinsky Ballet performs in Wales for the first time in 10 years, and will give its only 2016 UK performances at the Centre.
Mariinsky Ballet
The Mariinsky Ballet presents two exciting programmes featuring works from contemporary choreographers:
On 14th and 15th April the Mariinsky Ballet performs a triple bill, beginning with Five Tangos from Hans Van Manen and paired to the vibrant music of legendary Argentinian tango composer Astor Pizzolla. British choreographer Wayne McGregor’s Infra is second on the bill; this is accompanied by Max Ritchter’s melancholic score, and illustrates life beneath a city with a mesmerising flow of solos, duets and ensembles. The third piece, Jerome Robbins’ In the Night, is an elegant sequence of duets, telling the story of couple and their relationships, performed to Chopin’s Nocturnes.
Both Five Tangos and Infra are the Mariinsky Ballet’s first UK performances of these works.
On 16th and 17th April the Mariinsky Ballet and Mariinsky Orchestra present a double bill of exquisite dance, created on two rousing Russian scores by Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Sacre is a full performance of the Rite of Spring, with choreography by Sasha Waltz specially created for the Mariinsky Ballet in 2013 to celebrate the centenary of Stravinsky’s legendary work, which caused a riot on its Paris debut.
Second on the bill is Alexi Ratmansky’s fast-paced Concerto DSCH; set to Dimitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto in F Major, it’s a dazzling response to the lifting of repressions of the Stalinist era. Both Sacre and Concerto DSCH are conducted by Valery Gergiev.
Mariinsky Orchestra
On 17th April the Mariinsky Orchestra presents family favourite Peter and the Wolf, an enchanting musical experience created by Sergei Prokofiev to help children identify different musical instruments, such as oboe, clarinet and flute. Performed alongside Tchaikovsky’s suite from The Nutcracker, Peter and the Wolf is a lovely way to introduce young children to the delights of classical music. Valery Gergiev narrates and conducts the performance, which is suitable for ages five and above.
The Mariinsky UK Tour is supported by BP.
