FRIDA KAHLO: painting the stage

National Youth Theatre of Wales launches a new chapter in its history with the presentation of Greg Cullen’s award-winning play Frida and Diego – A Love Story, opening at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre before touring throughout Wales. This is the first tour from NYTW for two years – it also marks Greg’s debut in his new role as artistic director for NYTW.

The extraordinary life and death of Frida Kahlo, renowned for her surrealist self-portraits and her tumultuous love affair with fellow Mexican artist Diego Rivera, lies at the heart of Greg’s play. Winner of an Edinburgh Fringe Festival award - and later staged at the Royal National Theatre as well as Frida’s native Mexico - The Guardian described the play’s daring mix of live music, poetry, painting and revolutionary politics as “fierce, passionate, beautiful..”

Kahlo has achieved almost legendary status since her death – she is one of Madonna’s favourite painters and actress Salma Hayek chose her as the subject of her first feature film “Frida” – recently nominated for six Oscars. So what will Welsh audiences make of this Mexican legend?

“Frida and Diego – A Love Story is a play about two Mexican painters, but in many ways could not be more Welsh,” Greg points out. “Both painters were concerned with forging a sense of their country’s experiences, history and culture and to redefine a sense of national identity for the modern era.”

Greg has won widespread acclaim for many groundbreaking productions that put young people centre stage. He was founder of the hugely successful Mid Powys Youth Theatre, who were twice invited to perform at the Royal National Theatre whilst winning 12 major awards. Greg will rehearse Frida and Diego – A Love Story at the NYTW Summer School in Aberystwyth (August 11 – September 6). The opening performances will be held at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre on September 5 and 6, before moving to North Wales and Cardiff.
