Wales Theatre Company present Under Milk Wood

International Theatre Director Michael Bogdanov takes on the exciting task of bringing Dylan Thomas' nostalgic Under Milk Wood prose to life with the newly established Wales Theatre Company - led by Mathew Rhys, in Dylan Thomas' home city, at the Swansea Grand Theatre from the 8th - 18th October.

This October sees the 50th anniversary of the first reading of Under Milk Wood in New York, November the 50th anniversary of Thomas’ death, also in New York, and January 2004 the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast of the world’s most famous radio play.

To mark these anniversaries and the launch of the new Wales Theatre Company, a high profile production of Under Milk Wood, directed by internationally renowned Artistic Director, Michael Bogdanov, will begin at Swansea Grand Theatre in October '03 and at the New Theatre, Cardiff before touring throughout the UK in 2004.

UNDER MILK WOOD, 'A play for voices', recounts the dreams, gossip and waking hours of the sleepy seaside town of Llareggub (‘bugger all’ backwards) over a period of 24 hours one Spring day. This voyeuristic slice of life in a typical Welsh seaside town by arguably the greatest lyric poet of the 20th century, began its life as a radio play in 1954 before becoming celebrated the world over as the best known and most performed piece of Welsh theatre. Under Milk Wood is in turn funny, touching and delightful, reflecting the places Dylan Thomas knew and grew up in Wales - particularly Laugharne, New Quay and Swansea.

Unforgettable characters such as Captain Cat, Myfanwy Price, The Reverend Ely Jenkins, Organ Morgan, Polly Garter and Dai Bread populate this odd place and their affectionate charm and humour still captivates and entertains, 50 years on.

Dylan Thomas died of an excess of alcohol in New York, November 12th 1953, supposedly uttering the apocryphal remark –‘ I’ve just drunk eighteen straight whiskies – I think that’s a record’. He never heard or saw Under Milk Wood performed.

Accompanying the production will be an exhibition of unique Thomas and Under Milk Wood memorabilia mounted by Geoff Towns, the world’s greatest expert on Dylan Thomas

Starring Mathew Rhys as First Voice and with Nia Roberts as Second Voice, plus Phil Harries, Russell Gomer, Morgan Rhys, Cath Dimmery, Nickie Rainsford, Llynos Daniel.
