Dance artists unite for programme

A UNIQUE programme of contemporary dance, bringing together seven emerging international dance artists from seven different countries, will be staged in Wales next month.

Welsh Independent Dance in collaboration with Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff will host the two-day event, which will offer audiences the opportunity to view the work of selected artists from Cardiff, Berlin, Luxembourg, Vienna, Istres (France), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Montreal.

Following the premiere at Chapter on January 9 and 10 the works will be staged in the other countries, culminating in Montreal.

Sandra Harnisch-Lacey will be creating the Cardiff programme. A familiar face on the Welsh dance scene, Sandra is interested in combining and integrating dance, theatre, music, film and text.

Her work is created through Welsh Independent Dance's Dance Bytes programme and will be opening the event.

It is a physical and stirring duet inspired by the real-life story of two East Germans escaping into the West during the cold war era.

Among the others creating work for the festival are Gerhard Maass of Berlin, an award-winning choreographer who trained in Amsterdam and New York.

His interest lies in showing a different view of our society by abstracting every-day pedestrian movements.

Luxembourg's Tania Soubry recently graduated from the Laban Centre, London where she completed a BA (Hons) in Dance Theatre.

Tania is tipped to be one of the leading figures within the Luxembourg dance scene and has already shown talent for choreography.

Her new work is a duet that uses an original sound score and projected images to enhance the two female figures.
