Henri Oguike is appointed Artistic Director of National Youth Dance Wales
|
Henri Oguike, the award winning dancer and choreographer, returns to his roots taking up post with NYDW for its 2004 and 2005 season.
Originally from Swansea, Henri and his company have taken the dance world by storm, winning Time Out Live Awards category as Most Outstanding New Company in 2001. Henri is a former member of Dynion, Wales’s all male dance company. He later studied music, drama and dance at Swansea College, a combination that has influenced the development of his choreography, which has been acclaimed for its innovative use of music and movement.
Henri arrives at National Youth Dance Wales in February with his team of international dancers to run a series of open, regional workshops that will give young people a chance to be selected for NYDW’s two-week long summer residency at Theatr Brycheiniog (July 19 – August 1, 2004). The annual course and open workshops offer Wales’s most talented dancers the opportunity to live and work alongside one of Europe’s most exciting dance companies. The residency culminates in a production by the students at Theatr Brycheiniog, alongside Henri Oguike Dance Company.
NYDW has won a strong following for its distinctive productions, which in the past have used state-of-the-art technology to transform traditional theatre spaces as well as site specific venues. Henri’s reputation as a gifted teacher as well as choreographer ensures that 2004 will promise something just as spectacular for audiences and students alike. “I am delighted to have been appointed Artistic Director of NYDW,” Henri says, “and look forward to an exciting time ahead.”
