Training Programme for Writers

Academi and Literature Training are running two pilot training programmes for writers.

Reaching for Words will focus on the uses of creative writing in health and social care. This four month training programme will start in April 2004 and will be run in partnership with Conwy and Denbighshire NHS Trust, and is likely to take place at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan. Participants will attend a full day seminar on a monthly basis, led by an experienced writer in the field, with contributions from guest writers and specialist trainers. Participants will also attend a half day training placement each month with the lead writer who will be working as a writer in residence in the Denbighshire area as part of the project.

Seven places are available on the course, and applicants should have some track record of running workshops and participatory projects (though not necessarily in a health and social care setting), they should also have had some work published and be able to commit to two days per month for the duration of the programme.

Touchpaper is a training programme that focuses on working as a writer with young people in out-of-school settings. This five-month training programme will start in May 2004 and is aimed at Welsh writers who are interested in learning how to use creative writing with young people in out-of-school settings. The project will involve three mini literature projects with young people, aged 14 and over, in a number of out-of-school venues such as the youth service, after-school clubs, socially excluded groups, and children's homes. The project will be led by a writer with extensive experience in this field.

Each mini project will consist of a series of five workshops with some end-product decided upon by the group of young people themselves. The young people will be asked to take part in evaluating the training programme and the progression of the writer participants. The training will consist of five half-day seminars given by the lead writer, with input from other people with relevant experience.

Six places are available for writer participants who will work alongside the lead writer, three of which will be at a very early stage in their career, and will be interested in using creative writing in this field. They will not need to be published, or have a track record of work with young people. The other three will be published writers who are mid-way through their career and have had some experience of working with young people, although not necessarily from socially excluded groups or outside school. You must be able to commit yourself to two days per month for the period of the programme.

There is no fee to take part in either of the project, and your travel expenses will be met.
Applications should be in the form of a CV and cover letter, explaining why you want to undertake the training, in what ways you feel you could benefit from the training, and what skills and training you feel you need in particular.
