Philip Pullman’s novel Clockwork to The Sherman

Philip Pullman’s novel Clockwork to The Sherman The words ‘opera’ and ‘children’ are rarely used in the same sentence, but all this is about to change when Unicorn Theatre for Children and The Philharmonia Orchestra bring their brand new adaptation of Philip Pullman’s novel Clockwork to The Sherman next week on Wednesday 25 February at 1.30pm, Thursday 26 February at 7pm and Friday 27 February at 10.00am and 7pm.

Pullman(who came third in the BBC’s Big Read Competition for ‘His Dark Materials’) has had his wonderful story of a Clockwork prince adapted in to an extraordinary new opera for everyone aged 8+. Director Tony Graham believes that his production is an exciting first operatic experience for children, “ This story has all the familiar hallmarks of light operetta, pantomime and a good old fashioned fairytale and the things that bind the whole thing together are the music, with a sound score that underpins the spooky, wintry atmosphere, and a chorus that captures the collective voice of the town’s inhabitants – it really is something that will thrill everyone who sees it”

The show includes eight performers and eight musicians with Welsh singer Zoe Todd, who was born and brought up in Pontypridd, playing one of the lead roles. The Welsh connection doesn’t end there, composer Stephen McNeff was also born inSouth Walesand even Philip Pullman himself spent some of his childhood in Harlech!
