YOUNGSTERS RESPOND TO DEATH OF FRIEND IN JOYRIDING ACCIDENT

YOUNGSTERS RESPOND TO DEATH OF FRIEND IN JOYRIDING ACCIDENT In July 2003, Christopher Breakspear, a member of the collaborative arts education initiative run by The Sherman Theatre and Cardiff Schools Service, was killed in a joyriding accident. His ‘Acting Out’ Cardiff classmates are now at the end of their final year and their last performance piece, NO MAN’S LAND, has been devised in response to Christopher’s death.

This Theatre in Education piece follows the story of a group of teenage friends who spend most of their spare time hanging out in a den they’ve made from various bits & pieces. One night, to celebrate Halloween, they decide to have a party. All is going well until a group of older lads gate-crash the party and offer the younger ones a chance to have some serious fun behind the wheel of a stolen car.

NO MAN’S LAND will be performed at The Sherman on Tuesday 27th April at 7.30pm and will then tour local schools where it will be performed to 12 – 15 year olds. The young people have worked with Project Director Jessica Naish and Designer Guy O’Donnell to create a funny, moving and relevant piece of young people’s theatre.

NO MAN’S LAND has been devised by the young people themselves and explores the tricky transition from childhood into adulthood, making choices when faced with peer pressure and understanding the value of true friendship

NO MAN’S LAND is the final performance piece for the ‘Acting Out’ Cardiff students who have been studying at The Sherman for the past two years. The project is an educational initiative between Cardiff Schools Service and The Sherman as part of the Shared Vocational Provision and Extending Opportunities Programme. The project aimed at Year 10 and Year 11 pupils, takes them out of the classroom and gives them hands-on experience and accreditation in a professional arts environment.

In addition to the evening performance of NO MAN’S LAND on 27th April there will also be a special 'Talk-Back' performance at 11am on Wednesday 28th April, where school groups are invited to watch the show and stay for a talk-back with the cast after the performance. The aim is to get feedback from the audience in order that the company can develop the piece to take out on tour to Cardiff High Schools at the end of May.

Tickets for performances at The Sherman are available from the Box Office on 029 2064 6900.
