a walk on the surreal side for National Youth Theatre of Wales, touring September 04 Whispers in the Woods/Sibrydion, Greg Cullen’s new production for NYTW, promises to be another extraordinary visual spectacle for audiences – as well as an inspiration for aspiring fashionistas. Inspired by the surreality of the traditional fairy story, Greg’s bi-lingual play for a 45-strong cast will feature a stunning array of costumes, including a dress made out of charmed pins and a tailor-made set of threads for a dandy wolf who woos a tailor’s daughter. The show aims to emulate the success of last year’s production, Frida and Diego – a love story, which won Best Production Design prize in the Third Annual Theatre-in-Wales Awards. “Our approach will be to create a modern tale for our times,” explains Greg. “Our magic may well be the magic of new technology to create a world in which anything can happen, but we will also be working with original music and choreography, as we did with Frida and Diego – a love story, and with a variety of ways of telling different stories, some of which will be highly comedic, whilst others will be told primarily through dance and song.” NYTW has built a strong reputation in recent years for discovering some of the best young actors now working on the stage and in film today – they include Matthew Rhys, currently appearing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Michael Sheen, Caroline Sheen and Joanna Page. Whispers in the Woods/Sibrydion can be seen at: Aberystwyth Arts Centre (September 3 and 4), Theatr Gwynedd, Bangor (September 7) and Sherman Theatre, Cardiff (September 10 & 11). All tickets cost just £5 and evening performances start at 7.30pm.
