Aberystwyth Arts Centre in partnership with Diversions Dance, Hope Street Liverpool and the Aberystwyth University Department of Theatre Film and TV Studies intends to establish an intensive skills-based vocational training course for theatre and dance practitioners which would be the first of its kind in Wales. The scheme is intended for those intending to pursue careers in performance (dance and theatre; technical and design), and Theatre-in-Education. The programme is aimed at performers in the early stages of their careers, young professionals and students emerging from college courses or practitioners who wish to diversify and consolidate their careers. It offers a bridge between performing arts education and the theatre as workplace and takes advantage of the excellent specialist facilities at the Arts Centre. The programme is aimed at emerging practitioners who wish to gain skills which will enable them to work in the professional theatre, with dance companies, community performance or to start up their own company. The focus of the course would be on entrepreneurial and administrative skills as well as on the development of appropriate performance skills. Participants will function as members of a theatre or dance company and will be given responsibility for developing a number of real projects to be delivered in a professional manner. It is planned to offer the programme free of charge and with a £80 per week training allowance, subject to satisfactory funding arrangements.
