The five finalists have been named for the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, which is being held at St David’s Hall, Cardiff this Sunday evening (June 19).

They are:
Nicole Cabell, soprano, USA
Luis Olivares Sandoval, tenor, Chile
Wendy Dawn Thompson, mezzo, New Zealand

The finalists of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition were selected from 507 singers chosen to audition out of over 700 applicants worldwide.

Three of the finalists have also been selected for the finals of the Rosenblatt Recital Series Song Prize which runs alongside the main competition.

They are Nicole Cabell, Wendy Dawn Thompson and Andrew Kennedy. Completing the line-up of finalists are Quinn Kelsey, baritone, USA and Georgian bass Mikhail Kolelishvili.

For the first time this competition, formerly the Lieder Prize, has its own final on Friday, June 17. Radio 3 will broadcast the final on Saturday evening, June 16. The final will be broadcast by BBC FOUR on Saturday, July 9.

The biennial competition is renowned for giving competitors valuable exposure and leverage into professional opera careers. This year's competition also forms part of Cardiff's celebrations marking 100 years as a city and 50 years as the capital of Wales.

Past winners have included Lisa Gasteen, Karita Mattila, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Katarina Karneus, all of whom have been become star names at the world’s opera houses. International opera star, Bryn Terfel won the Lieder prize in 1989.

The final is broadcast on Sunday evening on BBC TWO, presented by Huw Edwards and Aled Jones. BBC Radio 3 will also transmit the final.
