Wales Millennium Centre (WMC) welcomes some of the world’s finest dance companies this season in what is set to be a jam packed and diverse programme including flamenco, ballet, contemporary dance and hip hop. Richard Tynen, Director of Development at WMC says. “We can look forward to elegant contemporary dance from the likes of Matthew Bourne’s production of Edward Scissorhands, to classic ballet with Norwegian Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty to a hip hop version of Romeo and Juliet. Other shows to look forward to include Companhia de Dança Deborah Colker ‘No’ (Knot), an emotional performance of Ricochet Dance’s Man and Woman and Vincent Dance’s Broken Chords which features live string music.” Performances will take place in the main auditorium, the Donald Gordon Theatre, as well as WMC’s second and smaller theatre, the Weston Studio (full list under Notes to Editors). A diverse season awaits audiences which will feature classical, creative colorful and imaginative dance from local and international dance companies which will entertain young and old. The season will start in the Donald Gordon Theatre with a performance by the mastermind behind flamenco guitar, Paco Pena, with Flamenco in Concert, followed by the long-awaited dance version of Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands, which hits mid-March. From one end of the scale to another, a mix of street culture is next on the agenda, which will prove a real treat for street dance and hip hop lovers. Rumble ends its UK tour at WMC which is an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet like no other. Making its exclusive UK debut at WMC in June, the Norwegian National Ballet brings its brand new production of Sleeping Beauty for the first time to Wales. Based in Oslo, Norwegian National Ballet has gained an enviable reputation as one of the youngest and most dynamic companies in Europe. In July, Birmingham Royal Ballet brings its production of La Fille mal gardée to the Welsh stage which is a love story with wonderful wit and pulsating passion. Deborah Colker’s new show ‘No’ (Knot) explores the hidden depths of human desire. Brutal and beautiful, this astonishingly sexy show is an intrepid exploration of bodily freedom - and erotic constraint. With sixteen stunning dancers, including Deborah Colker herself, the Olivier Award-winning group of Brazilian dancers has a reputation for excellence that stretches around the world. The Weston Studio also has a wealth of performances this season which includes Ricochet Dance Productions’ Man & Woman choreographed by leading dance maker Fin Walker. Ricochets superb dancers are framed by gauzes shot with light on a stunning sculptural set by West End designer John Napier best known for Cats, Sunset Boulevard and South Pacific. This is followed by Cardiff based India Dance in Wales performing Natya Kala - The Art of Dance, which explores the haromisation between classic Indian Dance and Western Music. Following the sell out success of their last show, Vincent Dance Theatre’s new production of Broken Chords is a passionate, hilarious and subversive look at break-ups and breakdowns by eight multi-talented performers. Another Cardiff based company, Earthfall, will perform At Swim Two Boys based on Jamie O’Neill’s award-winning novel. Earthfall has received several awards including the Best Dance Performance 2005 in the Wales Theatre Awards and a Bafta Cymru Award winner for Best Short Film for Too Old To Dream. To end the season on a high at the Weston Studio, Independent Ballet Wales will bring its stunning new production of Geoffrey Chaucer's classic of English Literature The Canterbury Tales, also making their debut appearance at WMC.
