The Way it Was

The Way it Was The national tour of a brand new musical comedy about Wales in wartime, “THE WAY IT WAS” is coming to Pillgwenlly Millennium Centre, Newport from Wednesday 5 to Saturday 8 April.  Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Wales' only Mobile Theatre will transform the centre into a fully-equipped performance space, allowing us to enjoy a full-scale musical within our own community!

“THE WAY IT WAS” is a portrait of Wales in wartime, written to mark the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War 2, and it draws upon the reminiscence of Welsh people who lived through the period.  This fantastic new musical explores the fight to keep up morale in the face of evacuations, bombing and shortages of the essentials of everyday life.  Directed by Tim Baker, Clwyd Theatr Cymru’s award-winning Associate Director, “THE WAY IT WAS” is a tribute to the bravery and commitment of Welsh communities during our long struggle to win the war.

When war is declared in 1939 Jack Hopkins forms a musical combo to keep up spirits, but when his son Ioan is called up they are left without a pianist.  Meanwhile Flora is waging a war against her older sister, Gwen, and when a mysterious young evacuee arrives from London she has reinforcements.  'The Way It Was' tells Jack and Flora’s story in a brilliant, often humorous evocation of home life in a rural community in Wales.  It also includes popular songs of the time - wartime entertainment is a major theme - in its exploration of both the eccentric and austere experiences of daily life on the Home Front.

The show will be touring to three leisure centres in South Wales during March and April, with the performances at the Pillgwenlly Millennium Centre being the climax of this exciting new show.  By then, it will also have performed at Caerphilly Leisure Centre (Weds 22 - Sat 25 March) and Sir Thomas Picton School, Haverfordwest (Weds 29 March - Sat 1 April).

Tickets are on sale now on 0845 330 3565 (all calls charged at local rate) or at the leisure centres during normal opening hours. Prices are £7, Concessions £5 and Children/students £3.
