Gothic Horror Dracula Staged in Abergavenny

Gothic Horror Dracula Staged in Abergavenny Dracula, one the greatest horror stories ever told, will be staged at the Melville Theatre, Abergavenny, by senior members of Gwent Young People’s Theatre on Friday and Saturday 17 & 18 September.

The acclaimed Scottish playwright and poet Liz Lochhead adapted Bram Stoker’s classic novel to an even more chilling drama than the nightmare creation – whilst remaining refreshingly close to Stoker's original work.

She describes immersing herself in the book and: “After a sleepless night, my hair was standing on end, what with the mad Renfield in his lunatic asylum eating flies and playing John the Baptist to his coming master….”

This was before the encounter with Lucy’s ‘dream’ of flying with the red-eyed one above the lighthouse at Whitby, or Jonathan’s ‘dream’ of the three Vampire Brides’ advances upon him and of their being repelled by the furious Dracula….

'Still, what really attracted me to the story was Rule One for becoming a vampire-victim: "First of all you have to invite him in."'

Gwent Young People’s Theatre promise to live up to the high expectations of the Gothic encounter under the direction of Chris Durnall at the Melville Theatre, Drama Centre, Penypound, Abergavenny.

Friday & Saturday 17 & 18 September at 7.30, tickets £6 and £4 from the Borough Theatre, Abergavenny, 01873 850805.
