An International Performance Studies Conference, University of Wales, Bangor June 5 – 6, 2004 Nation or Notion? will be a thrilling and wide-ranging investigation into the possibilities and problems, the prophecies and the philosophies, the fantasies and the fallacies of performing the nation, across the fields of theatre, film and media, dance and opera. This conference will address issues such as nationhood, indigenous tradition, local vs. national, language and bilingualism, performing identity, and will place these current hot topics in Wales in a global context. The conference will feature papers, demonstrations and performances. With contributors from all over the world, the range of subjects covered is vast: Nationality and theatre in the Phillipines; Re-birth and regeneration in the Croatian theatre; Mexico and the Day of the Dead; Traditional Theatre in Taiwan; Indian Dance; Street Performance in Massachussetts; Ravenhill in Greece; the Boston Ideal Opera company; Nationality and Performance in Ethiopia. The Celtic nations are also well represented, with papers on Friel and McGuiness, Liz Lochhead, the Scottish National Theatre debate, dressing up as resistance in Northern Ireland, Irish and English Identities in Henry V.
