Kaite’s Creative Wales project will be a mixture of research and practice involving the interrogation of how dramatic monologues work; how disability writes (building on her AHRC Creative Fellowship); and how to create raw material for dramatic monologues from interviews with disabled people and by drawing on the work of other experts in the field. Kaite will also explore the ethical issues of creating work inspired by biography and the responsibilities of playwrights towards their subjects, and she will stretch her practice in writing for a variety of “voices”. Kaite aims to create an oral history record of diverse disabled individuals in Wales and to write a selection of monologues, informed by her learning and her practice as a dramatic writer. This Award will enable Kaite, who identifies as a disability artist, to establish a new theatrical source, specifically created for disabled performers.
