Theatr na n'Og

Theatr na n'Og- Painting with Light , Dylan Thomas Theatre , September 10, 2003
Neath-based theatre company Theatr na n'Og have established a reputation as one of the most innovative groups of their kind in Wales, bringing education and live theatre to thousands of schoolchildren in and around Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend.

Their latest production, directed by company stalwart Geinor Jones, revolves around the Rebecca Riots and the early days of photography and succeeds in bringing the period to life by bringing the audience right into the thick of the action: the play is performed in the round, with the audience split into three separate groups.

The play-within-a-play format - a notoriously difficult trick to pull off at the best of times - is handled beautifully here, and the three-strong cast(Siwan Bowen Davies, Crisian Hunnam and Geraint Pickard) weave in and out of their characterisations with verve and energy.

The structure of the story is such that the audience themselves have the power to determine how the tale ends, and the project is specifically designed to bring history to life and make it easily accessible to young people.

Companies such as Theatr na n'Og have a vital role to play in ensuring that children are able to understand the importance of history and its relevance to modern society. One can only hope that they will continue to thrive and develop their projects still further.
