At the Torch

Torch Theatre- Bedroom Farce , Torch Theatre, Milford Haven , October 21, 2004
Each cast member of this delightful production shows exactly how far on the humorous side of reality their character exists.

Just on the edge, John Pennington’s Ernest together with stylish Kate Dove as wife Delia, convince us of their absolute respectability, yet are so entertainingly witty in choosing the priorities of their comfortable life. There’s that leaking guttering, local restaurants – their son’s unwise marriage.

Sean Crowley’s effective set design gives early warning of the bedrooms’ personalities the audience will meet – and how well they all slot in.

The blissfully happy innocents, Malcolm and wife Kate (Vivienne Rowdon) are excellent and their youthful pranks and energy perfectly match their sleeping scene. I longed to see the rest of the house. Could it really have suffered so badly in the disastrous DIY hands of Noel White’s character?

Dave Ainsworth’s ever-complaining, back-pain suffering Nick, had many of the audience twisting in sympathy.

The less than sympathetic handling by his wife had some of us nodding with recognition. Wife Jan (Kyra Williams), practical and attractive, is immediately recognised as the inevitable ‘other woman’ of forthcoming events.

No cameo role here for director Peter Doran. His troubled, self-analytical Trevor along with mantra chanting, anxiety ridden Susannah, played so convincingly by Alex Alderton, are a couple who could disrupt the most normal of lives. They do so most hilariously, including a fight scene that could leave them permanently injured by the end of the month.

Eventually, after some classic Ayckbourn misunderstandings, things do get back to that humorous side of normal.

Here is a production that could comfortably travel anywhere.
