It takes an intriguing plot and an excellent cast to capture the attention of 300 sugar-filled children, but this is exactly what Peter Doran’s “Santa’s Missing Trousers” did last week. This hilarious comedy follows the endeavours of Gwyn, a homesick penguin, and Isambard Chilblain Brunel, a mad-cap inventor, desperate to get back to Milford Haven. Their adventure takes the pair to Santa’s workshop, where the audience meets Mrs Claus, her squabbling elves and a famous reindeer.
“Santa’s Missing Trousers” has the feel of a well-polished pantomime, encouraging kids to shout out when baddies appear on stage and aid the search for Santa’s slacks.
Much of the comedy revolves around double acts including elves Sniff and Scratch, whose buffoonery resembles that of children’s TV stars Dick and Dom and the Morecombe and Wise stylings of Gwyn and Boo.
The soundtrack for this production is stunning, with eight original sons written by director James Williams. With lyrical gold ranging from the Disney-esque: “Animals are silly, as silly as can be, Did you ever meet a crow who’d been to uni-ver-sity?” to an elf version of Swansea Rap, with lines like: “I’m a hip-hop rapper, but I’m mainly wapping presents”.
A glimmering landscape set the stage for dazzling special effects, with Santa’s workshop being the most impressive spectacle.
